Debt Reduction

by Regina
(Kansas City MO)

My total debt as of today is about $5,000. Only 675.00 is credit card debt.

My monthly income is $2,000.00 before taxes.i bring home about 1650.00. My major concern is a garnishment that is ongoing in the amount of 1800.00.

I have outstanding utility bills as well.

Where do I start ?

Your debt problems

Regina,

It sounds like you are in a tough situation. The first thing I would recommend is that you contact Legal Aid or someone in the court system to find out whether you can get the garnishment waived or modified due to your financial hardship. It may take some digging, but if you never challenged the wage garnishment, or if your financial circumstances have changed since the garnishment was ordered, it's worth exploring.

I would also suggest you talk with a local non-profit credit counseling agency. Though they probably can't do much with your debts (they are relatively small, believe it or not!) they can help you review your budget, and will likely also be able to refer you to agencies in your area that may be able to help with some of your living expenses, such as utilities.

Finally, I would encourage you to check out your local Debtors Anonymous group. You may find the support and encouragement you need there to turn your financial life around.

We wish you only the best.
