Can't seem to get on track

We have alot of medical debt that we can't even afford to set up a payment plan with each creditor. Many have gone to collections. We are pay check to pay check and struggle to pay our mortgage and monthly bills. I have a steady job, but my husband's line of work is not consistent, so we cant count on a certain amount each week. I have adult ADD and struggle with money management anyway. Any suggestions? HELP!

Getting your finances on track
by: Gerri

My heart goes out to you. It can be very tough to get your finances on track, and even more so when you are dealing with erratic income and a disability.

I would recommend three things for you.

First, I don't know whether you are in treatment for your ADD but if you are not, getting treatment could be very helpful in getting your financial life back on track. In our e-book we talk about some of the challenges that people face when they are trying to get out of debt and have other issues that are making it more difficult. ADD is one of the illnesses associated with financial problems. Dr. Russel Barkley is an expert on ADD and has written about the association between ADD and financial issues. You may want to check out his website: www.russellbarkley.org.

Secondly, because you have medical bills you can't pay, it is essential that you get some outside help with these bills. They will not simply go away. If you don't pay them, or can't work out some kind of payment arrangement you are going to face collection calls and potentially lawsuits as well. As we explain in our e-book Reduce Debt Reduce Stress, it would be a good idea for you to seek help from a reputable credit counseling agency, as well as from a bankruptcy attorney. Please don't put this off. It is an essential step to making your life more manageable.

Third, once you have a plan for handling these debts - whether it's working with a credit counseling agency or filing for bankruptcy - your next step will be to get the ongoing support you and your husband need to stay on track. In the ebook, we talk about different organizations that can provide this kind of help and we have a page of these resources on our website as well. Given the challenges you are facing, I think it will be crucial for you to have some kind of support - whether it's from Debtor's Anonymous, a program like Financial Peace University, or working with a Financial Recovery Counselor.

I do think you would find our e-book helpful, and and hope you will take the time to read it. In particular, I think it may be helpful for you to read the stories of other people who have tackled their challenges and overcome them. Hopefully, we will hear from you as a success story in the future!
